Dropside, Tipper or Enclosed Van?
A dropside provides open loading access. A tipper adds a body designed to discharge suitable material by tipping. For goods that need a roof and enclosed sides, a panel van or Luton may be the better fit.
Do not choose a dropside solely because something is long or bulky. Check how it will be positioned, restrained and unloaded, whether overhang creates additional requirements, and whether the vehicle can legally carry the weight.
Compare the wider fleet on all vans if your load requires enclosed space, a different body or a different cab arrangement.
Materials, Equipment & Supplier Runs
Timber, fencing components, landscaping supplies and suitable equipment can benefit from open access. Dense materials may reach a weight limit well before the bed looks full, so obtain reliable weights rather than estimating by appearance.
Plan the return journey too: pallets, unused materials and empty containers take space and add weight. Ask the supplier how the goods will be loaded and make sure the destination has a suitable unloading arrangement.

How much weight can a dropside carry?
It depends on the chassis, body, equipment and occupants. A 3.5-tonne maximum authorised mass is not a 3.5-tonne cargo allowance. Confirm the vehicle plate, axle limits and usable payload before planning a load.
Can I drive a dropside on a car licence?
A petrol or diesel dropside up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass normally falls within category B entitlement. Licence conditions, automatic restrictions and hire eligibility still apply. Check GOV.UK licence categories for the vehicle offered.
Where do I collect the vehicle?
